After PayPal, Musk founded SpaceX (2001) with the hope of making humankind a spacefairing and multiplanetary species as its ultimate goal. The company's immediate goals are to lower the cost of rocket fabrication, including making rockets reusable for multiple missions.

Tesla Motors (2003) was founded by Martin Ebenhard and Marc Tarpenning, with Musk contributing monetarily to the company upon launch and sitting as its chairman beginning in 2004. In 2008, Musk took a more active role in the company, becoming its CEO. The vision of Tesla as stated by Musk is to jumpstart advancement in the electric car industry in an effort to combat the effects of climate change.
